Pack 710 will hold it annual Raingutter Regatta on Saturday August 25 starting at 10:00 am. Please take a moment to review the rules. Pack 710 Official 2007 Raingutter Regatta Rules Cub Scout Pack 710 will hold its Raingutter Regatta on Saturday, August 25,2007 at the Kehoe France Activity Center. The registration fee of $2.00 per boat will go toward buying the trophies and ribbons. We will be making a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place award for each division with the winner of each division racing for the Championship trophy. Awards for best decorated will also be given. All winners will be presented that day.
Construction Rules 1. The boat must be made of the original wood, mast, sail, rudder, and keel in the official Cub Scout Raingutter Regatta Derby kit. With the exception of painting or decal sticker decoration, you may not add anything to the sail, rudder, or keel. 2. With the exception of decorations for aesthetic purpose only, nothing can be added to the boat. No material can be added to increase the width, length, or weight of the boat. 3. You must build a new boat for this derby. No previously used boat can be raced. An adult can and should help in the construction of the boat. 4. Hull may be no longer than 7 inches nor shorter than 6 ½ inches. . 5. Mast should measure 6 ½ inches from deck to top 6. The sail can be no larger than the material supplied. The sail cannot be secured to the hull (boat body). 7. The keel and rudder supplied in the kit must be used with no alterations 8. There are no restrictions on color or design.
Procedure Rules 1. Boys take regatta boats to inspection table to be checked and numbered. 2. They take their boats to the registration table where the name and boat number of each contestant are entered on the heat sheet. No boats will be allowed to register once the first race for its division has begun. 3. Boats must only be run in their designated groups, i.e., Wolf vs. Wolf, Bear vs. Bear, etc. except in the overall pack races. 4. The race area will be cleared before each race. Only the officials and the two boys in the current race will be allowed near the raingutter raceway during a race. 5. The race is run in heats. The boats are propelled by boys blowing into the sails with pack-issued straws. a. Start with the boat’s stern touching the end of the gutter. The starter stands at the opposite end with his hands raised. When he drops his hand, the boys begin to blow. With a double raceway, two boys compete at the same time and the first boat to reach the end of the gutter wins. b. Once the race has started, the boys may not touch the boats with their hands or straws. c. If a boat capsizes, the boy may straighten his boat but cannot use his hand to advance the boat forward from the point where it was capsized. d. Should the boy at any time during the race advance his boat with his hand or straw, he forfeits the race. 6. The racing process we will use is called “Double Elimination”. That means that every boat must lose twice before it is out of the regatta. Each scout will get to race his boat at least two times. If he wins, he will continue to race. 7. There will be four racing divisions (Wolves, Bears, Webelos I, and Webelos II). Each group will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. The four first place winners will then race in the overall pack race. 1st, 2nd, 3rd places will be awarded in the overall pack race. The overall pack races are double elimination as well. 8. Favoritism and loud cheering/chanting for one particular scout will not be tolerated. Everyone has put a lot of time and effort into building a boat he is proud of and we should express our encouragement to each scout no matter if he wins or loses a race. REMEMBER, SCOUTS ARE ALWAYS FRIENDLY, KIND AND SUPPORTIVE TO ALL FELLOW SCOUTS. 9. The pack will have some tools for last minute adjustments, but to ensure that you have what you need, please bring your own. 10. These rules are the official rules. No other rules found in the Scout book, Scout magazine, or the Raingutter Regatta Derby Kit will apply to the Pack 710 Raingutter Regatta. Any suggested changes can be submitted to the Pack 710 Rules Committee for next year’s derby. 11. A disagreement with the rules on race day can be handled and corrected only after full agreement between the Derby judges, Cubmaster, and the Rules Committee Chairperson. 12. If a boat is damaged during racing (i.e., rudder, keel, mast falls off), it may be repaired after the race, but the results of that race will stand.
Thank you for your consideration, Pack 710 Rules Committee
